Due chiacchiere con… ROBYN PARKS

• Come è nata la tua passione per il basket e quali erano i tuoi idoli giovanili, ai quali ti sei ispirata?

Mio padre mi ha fatto conoscere il basket portando me e mio fratello in palestra per vederlo giocare, e da allora mi sono innamorata del gioco. Kevin Durant e Seimone Augustus sono quelli che amavo guardare giocare quando ero bambina e che mi hanno in qualche modo ispirata.

• Hai fatto un’ottima carriera al college, a VCU: che ricordi hai di quel periodo e quando hai iniziato a pensare ad una carriera fuori dagli Stati Uniti?

Ho molti ricordi di VCU sia dentro che fuori dal campo, e sono ricordi che porterò sempre con me. A dir la verità ho sempre pensato un giorno di poter e voler giocare all’estero, fin dai tempi dell’high school.

• Nei primi anni della tua carriera da professionista all’estero, hai giocato nel 2014 nel campionato spagnolo a Gran Canaria: che tipo di basket hai trovato lì? È stato difficile affrontare un gioco ed una mentalità completamente diversa da quella americana con cui sei cresciuta?

Mi è piaciuto molto giocare con Gran Canaria, e mi sono trovata fin da subito bene lì. Non ho trovato molte differenze, per me il basket non era molto diverso dal basket che giocavo in America, quindi sono stata in grado di adattarmi molto rapidamente e di avere una stagione di grande successo in Spagna.

• Dopo questo esordio spagnolo, diventi un’autentica giramondo del basket, andando di nuovo in Ungheria, Polonia, Angola e Spagna: cosa ti hanno lasciato queste esperienze e cosa hai ottenuto da ognuno di questi paesi così diversi tra loro?

Ogni paese mi ha lasciato qualcosa di diverso, ed ho usato tutte queste esperienze per crescere come giocatrice e come persona soprattutto.

• Nella stagione 2021/2022 arrivi in Italia, a Campobasso: conoscevi già l’Italia prima di arrivare? Cosa ti ha sorpreso di più, dentro e fuori dal campo, rispetto ad alcune tradizioni tipiche italiane?

Non conoscevo l’Italia, quella è stata la mia prima stagione, e non avevo assolutamente idea di cosa aspettarmi. Ho imparato però fin da subito ad amare tutto dell’Italia. Le persone sono fantastiche, il cibo è ottimo e il paese nel complesso è semplicemente fantastico.

• Hai qualche ricordo particolare di questi due anni in Italia, magari qualche episodio con una tua compagna di squadra, o qualcosa che ti fa dire “alla fine sono un po’ italiana”?

Ho tanti ricordi legati a queste due stagioni, ed è difficile scegliere. Ma ciò che ricordo con maggior piacere è l’affetto che mi hanno dimostrato i tifosi di Campobasso: mi hanno fatta sentire una di loro, una italiana in tutto e per tutto.

• Dopo anni trascorsi all’estero, come pensi di aver migliorato il tuo gioco? Che tipo di giocatrice eri prima e come ti giudichi adesso, dopo aver assorbito al massimo il basket mondiale?

Penso di aver sviluppato enormemente il mio gioco da quando gioco all’estero. Sono sicura che giocare tutte queste partite mi ha aiutata parecchio a crescere, ma il vero motivo per cui sono stata in grado di migliorare il mio gioco è grazie ai miei allenatori in America. In questo momento, mi vedo come una giocatrice totale, che può fare tutto sul campo per aiutare la squadra.

• Da queste esperienze in giro per il mondo, che consiglio daresti ad una giovane ragazza che avrà l’opportunità di giocare all’estero?

Potrei solo dirle di continuare a lavorare sodo e di non rinunciare mai ai propri sogni.

• Ora, ti aspetta una bella esperienza durante il training camp delle Chicago Sky, per trovare un posto in WNBA (NB: poi ottenuto, diventando parte del roster 2023 delle Sky): quali sono le tue aspettative e cosa pensi di portare in una squadra di questo livello?

Non ho aspettative. E tutto ciò di cui l’allenatore e la squadra avranno bisogno da me, sarà quello che ho intenzione di portare, senza ombra di dubbio.

• Uscendo dal campo, cosa ci racconti di Robyn quando non è impegnata con allenamenti o partite? Cosa ti piace fare nel tuo tempo libero? Hai qualche passione che stai cercando di alimentare non appena hai tempo?

Fuori dal campo sono una persona davvero tranquilla e semplice, che ama ascoltare musica, stare con la famiglia e giocare a Call Of Duty sulla mia Xbox.

My dad introduced me to basketball by taking me and my brother to the gym to watch him play, I’ve been in love with the game ever since. Kevin Durant and Seimone Augustus are who I loved watching play when I was a kid .

2) You made a very good career in college, with VCU: what memories do you have of that period and when did you start thinking about a career outside the US?

I have a lot of memories from VCU both on and off the court, and I’ll always carry those memories with me. I knew I wanted to play overseas when I was in high school .

3) In the early years of your pro career overseas, you played in 2014 in the Spanish league at Gran Canaria: what kind of basketball did you find there? Was it difficult to deal with a game and a completely different mentality than the American one you grew up with?

I loved playing with Gran Canaria. For me the basketball wasn’t much different than the basketball I played in America so I was able to adjust very quickly and have a very successful season.

4) After this Spanish debut, you become a basketball globetrotter, going to Hungary, Poland, Angola and Spain again: what do you bring with you from all these experiences and from each of these countries, so different from each other?

Each country has tough me something different , i used all these different experiences to grow as a player and a person.

5) In 2021/2022 season you arrive in Italy, at Campobasso: did you already know Italy before arriving? what surprised you the most, both in and out the court, with the typical Italian traditions?

No, 2021/2022 was my first season so I had no idea what to expect but I love everything about Italy. The people are great, the food is great, and the country overall is just amazing.

6) Do you have any particular memories of these two years in Italy, maybe some episodes with one of your teammates, or something that makes you say “in the end, I am a little bit Italian”?

I have a lot of memories, but the love that the fans of Campobasso showed me made me feel like I was one of them, an Italian .

7) After years spent overseas, how do you think you have improved your game? What kind of player were you first and how do you rate yourself now, after absorbing world basketball to the fullest?

I think I’ve developed my game tremendously since I’ve been playing overseas. I’m sure playin the games helped quite a bit but the real reason I have been able to improve my game is because of my trainers in America . Right now, I see myself as an overall player, a player that can do everything.

8) From these experiences around the world, What advice would you give to a young player who will have the opportunity to play overseas?

Just continue to work hard and never give up on your dreams .

9) Now, a great experience awaits you during the training camp in Chicago, to find a place in the WNBA: what are your expectations and what do you plan to bring to a team of this level?

I don’t have any expectations. And whatever the coach/team needs from me is what I plan to bring .

10) Leaving the court, what do you tell us about Robyn when she’s not busy with training or games? What do you like to do in your free time? Do you have any passion you are looking to feed as soon as you have time?

Off the court I’m just a really cool person that loves to listen to music, be around family, and play Call Of Duty on my Xbox.
